Varicose veins are dilated, purplish vessels that contain blood. They can be located on the eyelid, where they are highly visible because the skin is very thin at this level, allowing the vein to be seen through.
The sclerosing products normally used for varicose veins of the lower limbs cannot be used, as they are dangerous for the eyelids. However, it is possible to remove them using a Muller hook (the smallest size available) under local anaesthetic.
It's a minimally invasive procedure that leaves no scars; the only difficulty is anatomically recognizing the vessel.
